The Meditate Every Day Project

Setting goals is something I've always been leery of doing. Not that goals are bad -- but getting in the habit of setting and forgetting them is. That's why I like to keep my goals short term and I turn to having intentions for longer term aspirations. I'll probably delve into that on a future show.

For now I've decided to make the dangerous decision to meditate every day this week. Considering my current pattern has been once or twice a week at best, it's going to take a bit of discipline to make it happen. But it's important, so I'm gonna do it.

Who's with me?

*Update* Wow. Lots of replies and questions! I'm going to record a quick audio segment guiding you through the basics of meditation tonight. It will be focused on the simple technique to get you started.

Have you unlocked the top game on the original Wii Fit? It is called Lotus Focus. Essentially, it teaches you to meditate, sitting cross-legged on the balance board. It is so awesome. Try it, if you have not.

That's cool, Bill. I had no idea Wii Fit went into that! I could see it being awesome for keeping your back straight too.

Between illness, NaNoWriMo and guitar playing you throw down this challenge. Of course I will take up the gauntlet.

Jerk. :p

Sifu Shawn, have you read this http://www.amazon.com/Mindfulness-Plain-English-Revised-Expanded/dp/0861713214/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1GE3HCWCB51KE&colid=3QPEFHMWZ2EUX

and if so, would you recommend it as a primer on meditation and mindfulness?

Vipassana is a tradition that goes way, way back. My brother actually just got back from a 10 day Vipassana retreat a couple weeks ago. It's a great technique and while its roots are in Buddhism, it's something people from all walks of life can do. I haven't read that particular book, but it looks clearly written and not weighted down by heavy words and concepts.

Just scanning through the preview read on Amazon, it looks solid.

I use a method I got from a copy of this book I was given years ago http://www.amazon.com/Centering-Growth-Sanders-G-Laurie/dp/0892814209

I've never managed to work my way the whole way through, but I find even the basic meditations very helpful.

It's on ye olde wishlist now; hopefully somebody (wife?) acquires it for me for XMas.
