Spiritual seeking without the fluff.
Good stuff. I have been looking into finding a meditation outlet for the last 10 years. I dont' know where to start. I have a Kwan Um School of Zen temple within a short ride of my house, but I don't know if that is the best place to start. Having grown up Catholic, I still fight the prejudices that come with my upbringing, as it relates other "religions". Any recommendations?
Approach it as practically as possible. Meditation really isn't a religious practice, although it can be useful as a PART of one if you choose to apply it in that direction. I recorded a quick tutorial if you want to give it a shot. Frankly, I don't think you NEED to go somewhere and find a teacher to do it. http://www.strivingpodcast.com/2010/11/striving-supplemental-how-to-meditate.htmlBut really, if you got a Zen place nearby, why not? Give it a shot. The worst that can happen is it doesn't jive with how your brain works.
